SUN VALLEY, Idaho – Marco Odermatt was celebrating yet another trophy when he accidentally broke it.
After securing his latest giant slalom crystal globe at the World Cup finals, the Swiss skier tossed it into the air—only for it to collide with his medal and shatter upon landing.
“I’ve got some glass pieces to share with the coaches now,” Odermatt joked. “It makes for a good story.”
With 13 season-long World Cup trophies to his name four in GS, two in downhill, three in super-G, and four overall titles he can afford to lose a few. He has no plans to replace the broken one.
“It’ll be a fun memory,” he said of the mishap.
Odermatt had already secured the GS title before the final race, where he finished second to his Swiss teammate Loic Meillard. Norwegian Henrik Kristoffersen took third. The trophy presentation followed the medal ceremony, and during the celebrations with his team, the unfortunate accident occurred.

This isn’t the first time Odermatt has damaged a trophy. After earning his first World Cup podium in 2019, he dropped and broke that award as well. “I still have half of it at home,” he recalled.
As for the race itself, Meillard dominated, leading after the first run and sealing victory with a combined time of 2:15.21 on a warm, sunlit course. He beat Odermatt by 0.95 seconds, with Kristoffersen just behind.
“The key is to push and learn from each other to keep improving,” Meillard said. When asked how Odermatt was skiing, he quipped, “Right now, I guess I’m better. But normally, yeah, he’s pretty good.”
Odermatt had a rough start to the GS season, failing to finish his first two races. However, he rebounded with seven consecutive podiums, including three victories.
“Hopefully, breaking the trophy isn’t bad luck,” Odermatt said with a laugh. “Maybe it just symbolizes how my season started rough at first, but finishing with another globe is amazing.”
