Ohio State mourned the death football player Ben Christman.
According to an obituary published Tuesday by the Akron Beacon Journal, Christman died in his sleep on Feb. 11 from natural causes. The offensive lineman began his collegiate career for the Buckeyes in 2021 before transferring to Kentucky and playing with UNLV last season.
Ohio State Football responded to the tragic news in a social media post last week.
The members of the Ohio State football program are saddened to learn of the passing of Ben Christman, a member of our team in 2021 and 2022,” Ohio State wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and those who knew Ben well.”
In a statement shared by UNLV last Wednesday, which would have been Christman’s 22nd birthday, head coach Dan Mullen said the “team’s heart is broken” by Christman’s passing.
“Since the day Ben set foot on our campus a month ago, he made the Rebels a better program,” Mullen said. “Ben was an easy choice for our leadership committee as he had earned the immediate respect, admiration, and friendship of all his teammates. Our prayers go out to his family and all who knew him. Ben made the world a better place and he will be missed.”
The university also shared a statement from President Keith E. Whitfield.
“I was incredibly saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Ben Christman,” Whitfield said. “There is little that can be said to lessen the pain of suddenly losing a member of our university family at such a young age, and my heart breaks for all who knew and loved him. On behalf of UNLV, our sincere condolences are with Ben’s family, friends, loved ones, and teammates during this very difficult time.”
Christman’s family requested donations to The Ben Christman Memorial Scholarship Fund in lieu of flowers or gifts.
“Those who knew Ben will remember him for his joyful spirit, kind heart, and unshakeable commitment to those around him,” his obituary read. “He leaves behind a family who adored him, friends and teammates who admired him, and a community who will forever cherish the impact he made during his brief time with us.”
