The funeral of Olivia Tuohy, the young nurse who tragically passed away following her participation in the Edinburgh Half Marathon, took place at Ennis Cathedral. Olivia Tuohy, aged 24 and originally from Ennis, Co Clare, was a graduate of Queen Margaret University and worked at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh. She died suddenly on May 25th after collapsing during the race.
Her parents, Kieran and Liz Tuohy, shared emotional memories of their daughter during the funeral Mass. Liz described the moment they learned of the incident and immediately made travel plans to Edinburgh. On the way to Dublin Airport, a symbolic moment brought them a sense of peace.
“My sister pointed out a massive double rainbow in the sky. I remember saying, ‘Fly high, baby girl.’ Now, whenever you see a rainbow, think of Olivia. That’s her watching over us,” said Liz Tuohy.
She expressed sincere thanks to those who tried to help Olivia at the scene, including fellow runners and medical personnel, as well as to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust for assisting in bringing Olivia home.
Kieran Tuohy spoke with pride about Olivia’s vibrant personality and determination. He fondly recounted teaching her how to drive a journey that began with slamming doors, tough love, and ended with success on her first driving test attempt.
“She lived a short but beautiful life, full of cherished moments,” he said.
Stephen Tuohy, Olivia’s brother, encouraged attendees to take photos with their loved ones and value the time they have together. “You never know how long you’ll have that person beside you,” he reminded mourners.
Olivia’s boyfriend Michael offered a heartfelt tribute, stating there was “nothing left unsaid” between them. He described her as a beautiful and kind soul who brought endless joy into his life.
During the offertory, symbols representing Olivia’s life were presented, including her nursing badge and uniform, a memory book from Edinburgh hospital staff, a hurley and football, a shopping bag, and an Aperol Spritz glass.
After the Mass, Olivia was laid to rest at Drumcliffe Cemetery. A guard of honour was provided by her former clubs, including Banner Ladies GAA and Éire Óg Camogie. She also played with Ennis Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club during her younger years.
