Novak Djokovic drops major retirement suggestion after French Open defeat

Novak Djokovic shared that he intends to compete in this year’s Wimbledon and US Open, but he isn’t certain whether he’ll continue playing into the 2026 season.

“This might have been my last match here, I’m not sure,” Djokovic said. “That’s why I was more emotional at the end.

“If this turns out to be my final Roland Garros appearance, it was a beautiful farewell, especially because of the incredible atmosphere and support I felt from the crowd.

“At this stage in my career, I really don’t know what the future holds. I’m just going to keep going for now.

“Twelve months feels like a long time when you’re at this point in your career. Do I want to keep playing? Absolutely. But whether I’ll be back here in a year, I truly don’t know.

“Wimbledon and the US Open are definitely on my schedule. That’s all I can say with certainty. I want to play both of those tournaments. As for anything beyond that, I can’t say for sure.”

Meanwhile, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who is set to face Carlos Alcaraz in the upcoming Grand Slam final the first ever between two players born in the 2000s responded to Djokovic’s comments, calling him an inspiration to younger players.

“First of all, I hope he’s not really done, because I think tennis still needs him,” Sinner said. “Having someone from a different generation around us younger players is really special.

“It’s incredible to see him in the locker room, always full of energy. I actually saw him practicing just a day or two ago, and he’s so meticulous with everything he does. He’s truly a role model.

“But if this really is the end for him, I’m grateful to be witnessing it it’s a moment in tennis history. Still, let’s hope it’s not over yet. He did say ‘maybe,’ so there’s still a chance.”
