Notre Dame tight end Kevin Bauman forced to retire from football due to left knee injury..

Notre Dame tight end Kevin Bauman’s football career has come to an unfortunate end after sustaining another injury to his left knee, the program announced Saturday.

According to the team’s public relations department, Bauman suffered an articular cartilage injury,  his fourth significant leg injury, all in the same leg, since 2021. Shortly after the announcement, Bauman confirmed via Instagram that he has chosen to medically retire from football.

“Life is all about the journey,” Bauman wrote. “Unfortunately, I’ve suffered another season-ending injury. After taking a few days to pray and reflect, I’ve accepted that my playing days are over but the rest of my life is just beginning.”

Bauman will remain with the team through the 2025 season and plans to graduate from Notre Dame with both undergraduate and graduate degrees. He credited the university for fostering his growth, resilience, and faith, calling his time there “a blessing” filled with lasting connections.

Entering his sixth season, Bauman was poised for his largest role yet after completing his first fully healthy year in 2024. He had emerged as a backup and special team contributor last season and was competing for significant offensive snaps this year. Offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Mike Denbrock praised Bauman’s improved movement and dedication, calling him “an incredible asset” to the team.

Bauman’s injury history includes a broken leg in 2021, ACL tears in 2022 and 2023, and now the latest setback in 2025. After finally regaining full health last year, he had been feeling and moving better than ever. Unfortunately, the loyal veteran will never get to see what role he might have played in the Irish offense this season.
