January 1, 2025 | Morgantown, WV — West Virginia University quarterback Nicco Marchiol has officially announced his decision to remain with the Mountaineers for the 2025 football season. The redshirt junior made the announcement on social media, expressing his commitment to the program and the Morgantown community.
“Morgantown has felt like home from the moment I first stepped on campus,” Marchiol wrote. “The unwavering support of the fans, the warmth of the community, and the brotherhood I share with my teammates have made this place truly special. Marchiol’s decision to stay comes amid a coaching change at WVU, with Rich Rodriguez returning as head coach. Marchiol was originally recruited by former head coach Neal Brown, who was let go in December 2024. Despite the transition, Marchiol has expressed confidence in Rodriguez’s leadership and the direction of the program.
In the 2024 season, Marchiol saw increased playing time due to injuries to starting quarterback Garrett Greene. He made his first career start in a road victory against Arizona, completing 18 of 22 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns. His performance was praised by head coach Neal Brown, who noted Marchiol’s efficiency and decision-making under pressure.
Marchiol’s ability to operate the run-pass option (RPO) offense effectively has been highlighted as one of his strengths. Offensive coordinator Chad Scott emphasized Marchiol’s feel for the RPO game, noting that his experience in high school has translated well to the collegiate level.
