The New York Jets are releasing veteran wide receiver Davante Adams after limping to a 5-12 record in 2024/25 NFL season; Adams is free to sign with any team he wishes; the move will save the Jets $30m on their cap.

The New York Jets have released veteran wide receiver Davante Adams following a disappointing 5-12 record in the 2024 NFL season. This strategic move is set to free up approximately $29.8 million in salary-cap space for the team, though it will incur an $8.3 million dead-cap charge.

Adams, a six-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro, joined the Jets in October 2024 after a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. In his 11 games with New York, he recorded 67 receptions for 854 yards and seven touchdowns. Despite these contributions, the Jets struggled to find success, culminating in a season that fell short of expectations.

The decision to release Adams comes on the heels of the Jets parting ways with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, signaling a significant shift in the team’s strategy and roster composition. Attempts to trade Adams were unsuccessful, largely due to the substantial financial commitment remaining on his contract. Now a free agent, the 32-year-old receiver is free to sign with any team, potentially before the official free-agency period commences.

Adams’ release leaves a notable void in the Jets’ receiving corps. With fellow receiver Allen Lazard also likely to depart and tight end Tyler Conklin entering free agency, the team faces challenges in bolstering its offensive lineup. Garrett Wilson, who has achieved three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, is eligible for a contract extension but may consider a trade. Other receivers, such as Malachi Corley and Xavier Gipson, along with tight end Jeremy Ruckert, have yet to make a significant impact. The Jets will need to be proactive in free agency and the upcoming draft to address these gaps, especially as they seek a new quarterback following Rodgers’ departure.

As Adams evaluates his options, several teams may express interest in acquiring his talents. His experience and consistent performance make him a valuable asset for franchises aiming to enhance their offensive capabilities. However, considerations regarding financial implications and Adams’ preferences will play a crucial role in determining his next destination.
