Coco Gauff secured her second Grand Slam title on Saturday, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling three-set match. The 21 year-old became the fifth American woman this century to win multiple major titles joining an elite group last entered by Serena Williams in 2002, before Gauff was even born.
Gauff’s impressive run at Roland Garros ended with a 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 victory over Sabalenka, a three-time Grand Slam winner. Since Serena’s era of dominance, four American women Sloane Stephens (US Open 2017), Sofia Kenin (Australian Open 2020), Coco Gauff (US Open 2023), and Madison Keys (Australian Open 2025) had captured major titles. However, none of them managed to win more than once, and each had suffered defeat in a Grand Slam final.
Gauff has now broken that trend, becoming the first American woman since Serena to claim more than one major title. Fittingly, Serena’s second Slam came at the French Open in 2002 the same event where Gauff just triumphed. That year, Serena would go on to win Wimbledon and the US Open as well, finishing as the year-end No. 1 in what was one of the greatest seasons in tennis history.
Other American women who have claimed multiple Grand Slam titles since 2000 include Jennifer Capriati (French Open 2001) and Venus Williams (US Open 2000, 2001).
Despite the victory, Gauff remains World No. 2, maintaining a commanding 3,500-point lead over Sabalenka. Her next test will be Wimbledon, where she has yet to progress beyond the fourth round.
