The Las Vegas Raiders have removed wide receiver Michael Gallup from the reserve-retired list, as the 29-year-old is planning a return to the NFL in 2025.
Gallup unexpectedly retired just before the start of Raiders training camp last year, stepping away from the game despite signing a one-year deal worth up to $3 million on April 30. He had participated in OTAs and minicamp before making his decision. Prior to joining Las Vegas, he was released by the Dallas Cowboys after six seasons, during which he recorded 266 receptions for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Gallup’s best season came in 2019 when he posted 66 catches for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns in 14 games—his only 1,000-yard season. However, after tearing the ACL in his left knee late in the 2021 season, he struggled to regain his previous form. Though the Cowboys signed him to a five-year, $57.5 million contract in 2022, he averaged just 15.5 yards per catch and failed to produce a 100-yard game in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, finishing with a combined 73 receptions for 842 yards and six touchdowns.
In addition to Gallup’s release, the Raiders are also set to part ways with starting center Andre James at the start of the new league year, according to sources confirming an NFL Network report.
James, who signed a three-year, $24 million extension last offseason, appeared in 13 games (11 starts) during the 2024 season. His release will save Las Vegas $1.5 million in salary cap space and paves the way for Jackson Powers-Johnson to take over as the starting center.
Powers-Johnson, a standout rookie, logged 400 offensive snaps at center and 504 at guard in his debut season. A Rimington Trophy winner and unanimous All-American at Oregon in 2023, he was regarded as one of the top center prospects in the country.
