Mathieu van der Poel’s important Classics domestique joins rival team.

Edward Planckaert has become a key figure in Mathieu van der Poel’s Classics squad over his five-year stint with Alpecin-Deceuninck. However, starting in 2026, the 30-year-old Belgian will move to rival team Soudal–Quick-Step, reuniting with former teammate Tim Merlier.

“I began cycling at eight years old, always dreaming of riding for a team like Soudal–Quick-Step. I’m thrilled that this dream is finally coming true next year,” Planckaert expressed in a team statement announcing his three-year deal.

“I’ve always admired the Wolfpack’s fighting spirit and how they race with passion. Becoming part of that from 2026 means a lot to me. As a proud Flandrien, I’m ready to give my all and help the team and our leaders secure as many victories as possible,” he added.

Soudal–Quick-Step CEO Jurgen Foré praised the signing, saying, “As we continue to build for next season, bringing in Edward is a great move. He’s proven himself on the World Tour in a variety of situations, and we believe his experience in the Classics, Grand Tours, and flat finishes will be crucial when it matters most.”
