Dutch cycling star Mathieu van der Poel has officially revealed his race schedule for the 2025 season, confirming his return to some of the most prestigious one-day races in Europe. The 28-year-old, known for his explosive performances and versatility, will tackle a range of iconic events in the spring as part of his goal to dominate the Classics in 2025.
Van der Poel, who rides for Alpecin-Deceuninck, has already proven himself as one of the most exciting talents in the sport, with victories at prestigious races such as the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. In 2025, the Dutchman will once again be aiming for top honors in these races, along with others in Italy and Belgium, all of which are crucial to solidifying his legacy as one of the greats in road racing.
The 2025 season will begin for Van der Poel with the Tirreno-Adriatico (10–16 March), the Italian stage race that he first participated in early in his career. Van der Poel’s participation in this seven-day race will serve as an important build-up for the coming spring Classics. Known for its diverse stages, including hilly terrain and individual time trials, the Corsa dei Due Mari will offer Van der Poel the opportunity to fine-tune his form while also competing against some of the biggest names in cycling.
Following Tirreno-Adriatico, Van der Poel’s next major target will be the iconic Milano-Sanremo (22 March), the first Monument of the season and one of the most storied races in cycling history. Known for its long distance and the challenge of tackling the famous climbs like the Poggio di Sanremo, the race presents the perfect battleground for a rider of Van der Poel’s attacking style. Having come close in previous editions, the Dutchman will be eager to clinch his first victory in Italy’s “La Primavera.”
Belgium will then take center stage for Van der Poel, starting with the E3 Saxo Classic (28 March), a key precursor to the cobbled Classics. As one of the most important one-day races in the cycling calendar, the E3 Classic is renowned for its challenging route, including several brutal climbs and cobbled sections. With Van der Poel’s impressive skillset on such terrain, the race will serve as a key indicator of his form leading into the legendary Flandrian Classics.
On 6 April, Van der Poel will shift his focus to the Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders), arguably the race that has defined his career. The Dutchman won this historic event in 2020 and has since become one of the race’s most formidable competitors. The Ronde’s iconic climbs, such as the Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg, combined with its intense cobbled sections, will provide the perfect test for Van der Poel, whose explosive power and tactical mind make him a favorite for the victory.
The Paris-Roubaix (13 April), often referred to as the “Hell of the North,” is next on Van der Poel’s calendar. This brutal 257-kilometer race, which features over 50 kilometers of cobblestones, requires both endurance and immense mental toughness. Van der Poel’s aggressive riding style, combined with his ability to handle the demanding cobbled sectors, makes him a strong contender for the win. In 2023, he finished second in Paris-Roubaix, and the 2025 edition will be another chance to achieve the ultimate glory in what is perhaps the most challenging one-day race on the calendar.
With such a demanding and prestigious lineup, Van der Poel’s 2025 program is a clear statement of his intentions. He has already proven his ability to shine in the Classics, but with the combination of his raw power, tactical savvy, and unyielding determination, this season could see him further cement his status as one of the sport’s most dominant forces in one-day racing. Fans will be eagerly awaiting each of his performances, knowing that Mathieu van der Poel is always a threat to win when the road gets tough and the race is on the line.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Van der Poel as he chases more victories and seeks to add to his already impressive list of wins in 2025.
