BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
Maryland women’s basketball fought South Carolina in a tightly contested game, with neither team holding a lead greater than seven points.
In the end, though, it was the Gamecocks who had the edge when the final buzzer sounded, ending Maryland’s season with a 71-67 defeat in the Sweet Sixteen. South Carolina controlled the boards, outrebounding Maryland by 13 and using their physicality on defense to block seven shots.
Despite the disadvantage in the paint, the Terps remained competitive by forcing 17 turnovers and collecting seven steals, converting those opportunities into 18 points. However, their efforts fell just short.
Maryland’s tournament run lasted three games starting with a first-round win over Norfolk State, followed by a thrilling double-overtime victory against Alabama, before ultimately falling to South Carolina in the Sweet Sixteen.
