Marion County drowning victim identified as WVU employee

COLFAX, W.Va. — Authorities have identified the woman found dead in the Colfax area as Erin Bunner, a dedicated West Virginia University employee and Fairmont native. She was 49 years old and had built a long-standing career at WVU, where she worked for nearly two decades.

Bunner began her journey at the university in 2006 as a professional technologist within the Health Sciences Center. Through years of consistent service and professional growth, she eventually rose to the role of director of application and web support services in the former HSC Information Technology Services division. Her leadership and technical expertise made her a valuable asset to the institution.

In 2023, WVU consolidated its IT resources with those of the Health Sciences Center. As part of that restructuring, Bunner was appointed director of a newly merged teaching and learning applications team. This team plays a crucial role in supporting several key educational services across campus, reflecting her strong influence on the university’s digital learning environment.

Her passing has left a notable void in the WVU community, where she was respected for both her technical skills and her dedication to enhancing campus systems. Colleagues remember her as a committed professional with a passion for supporting students and faculty alike.

A celebration of life honoring Bunner’s legacy will take place from 1 to 6 p.m. on Monday, July 7, at Ford Funeral Home in Fairmont. A memorial service will follow to reflect on her life, career, and contributions to the university and broader community.
