The Duke Blue Devils are a strong contender to win the upcoming men’s NCAA Tournament, boasting an impressive 31-3 record. Legendary college basketball announcer Dick Vitale is among those predicting a championship celebration in Durham.
Vitale released his bracket for ESPN on Wednesday, analyzing the full 64-team field and selecting winners for each matchup. He has Duke, led by star freshman Cooper Flagg, reaching the Final Four alongside Houston, Florida, and Michigan State. His prediction sees the Blue Devils defeating Houston and Florida to capture their first national championship in a decade.
“Two heavyweights collide in a matchup for the ages,” Vitale wrote about the championship showdown between Duke and Florida. “Florida battles, but the Blue Devils’ size and speed put them over the top. Duke is cutting down the nets, baby!”
Vitale’s bracket has Duke advancing through the East region by defeating No. 8 seed Mississippi State, No. 4 seed Arizona, and No. 2 seed Alabama. Despite Flagg dealing with a sprained ankle, the seasoned broadcaster foresees a standout moment for the freshman in the Sweet 16 against Arizona.
“In crunch time, Duke’s Cooper Flagg makes a sensational steal and finishes it with a thunderous dunk to put the game out of reach,” Vitale predicted.
Vitale had the chance to watch Duke closely twice this season, first calling their February road loss to Clemson—his first game back after multiple battles with cancer before covering their ACC Tournament win over Louisville.
Duke’s NCAA Tournament journey kicks off Friday against either American or Mount St. Mary’s.
