Kyle Larson recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Hendrick Motorsports driver of the No. 5 Chevrolet is preparing to defend his title at the 1.5-mile track, where he kickstarted his dominant run last season.
Heading into the Pennzoil 400, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion remains optimistic, given his strong track record at Las Vegas. With an average finish of 9.4 across 17 starts, three victories (including last year’s spring race), and 629 laps led 405 of those in the Next-Gen era Larson is aiming for another strong performance in the fifth race of the season.
During a recent media session, Larson spoke highly of the track and the city, saying:
“Las Vegas (Motor Speedway) has been a great track for us since I joined the No. 5 HendrickCars.com team. We got our first win here together and have added a couple more since then. I think we have a couple of runner-up finishes, too. The track is great, but also getting to come to a cool city is fun as well.”
He also ranked Las Vegas among his top three favorite race destinations.
So far this season, Larson has secured two top-five finishes in four starts. Meanwhile, his dirt racing rival, Christopher Bell, has been making headlines after winning three consecutive races tying Larson’s 2021 record. Bell’s impressive feat, achieved at Phoenix Raceway, was last accomplished by Larson during his championship-winning season.
Following the Shriners Children’s 500 at Phoenix, Larson acknowledged Bell’s success in a post-race interview with NASCAR on Fox, stating:
“Winning back-to-back races is already tough in the Next Gen era, so for them to win three in a row is really impressive. Their team is strong, their race cars are fast, and Bell is a phenomenal driver. The more wins you get, the more confidence builds for both the driver and the team.”
Despite starting mid-pack at Phoenix, Larson delivered a strong third-place finish, contending with Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell in the final laps. Now, his focus shifts to securing a playoff spot with a victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, March 16.
