Khaman Maluach, the 7-foot-2 center from South Sudan, has officially committed to Duke University, joining the Blue Devils for the 2024–25 men’s basketball season. A standout recruit from the NBA Academy Africa in Senegal, Maluach is widely regarded as one of the top prospects in the 2025 NBA Draft. His decision to attend Duke was influenced by his admiration for former Blue Devil Zion Williamson, whose highlights inspired Maluach to pursue basketball

 

Despite his commitment, Maluach faces potential visa issues due to recent U.S. policy changes. The Trump administration has revoked visas for South Sudanese nationals, a move stemming from the country’s failure to accept repatriated citizens. This policy could impact Maluach’s ability to remain in the U.S., as his current student visa may not permit re-entry if he leaves the country

 

Duke University has acknowledged the situation, stating that it is reviewing the implications for affected students. The university’s commitment to supporting Maluach is evident, with head coach Jon Scheyer expressing excitement about his addition to the team. Scheyer highlighted Maluach’s unique talents, including his ability to score inside and out, handle the ball, and protect the rim

 

Maluach’s journey to Duke is remarkable. Born in Rumbek, South Sudan, he grew up as a refugee in Uganda before being introduced to basketball at a local camp organized by former NBA player Luol Deng. He later joined the NBA Academy Africa, where his skills rapidly developed. In 2023, at age 16, he became the youngest player on the South Sudan national team during the FIBA World Cup and contributed to the team’s qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics

 

In his freshman season at Duke, Maluach has demonstrated his potential, earning a spot on the ACC All-Freshman Team. His impressive stats include an average of 8.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and a field goal percentage .
