Kalen DeBoer reveals Ryan Williams’ injury sustained on controversial non-targeting call.

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer confirmed after the Crimson Tide’s 31-17 loss to Florida State that standout receiver Ryan Williams suffered a concussion late in the game.

“Yes, he got a concussion,” DeBoer said in response to the opening question of his postgame press conference.

The injury occurred with 6:13 remaining when quarterback Ty Simpson targeted Williams on a second-and-10 from Alabama’s 42-yard line. Williams dropped the pass and was then hit between two Seminole defenders. He remained down at Florida State’s 38-yard line as Alabama’s medical staff attended to him.

FSU’s Earl Little was initially flagged for targeting, but the call was overturned after review.

“The replay official starts with a clean look — he’s not bound to confirm the ruling on the field,” rules analyst Matt Austin explained. “This is clearly a defenseless player, and the defender does make contact to the head. The only question is whether it’s just a glancing blow. If I were in the replay booth, I’d call this targeting.”

Williams was eventually helped off the field and ended the night with five receptions for 30 yards.
