Michigan football’s coaching search just got serious, and the standard they should judge every candidate against is Kalen DeBoer. If they can’t find someone better, they should go hire him.
The coaching market is suddenly wide open in Ann Arbor, and unlike the last time Michigan needed a coach, there are no NCAA investigations hovering over the program. The sign-stealing scandal has been addressed, leaving Michigan with only probation and a hefty fine. That won’t scare off qualified candidates.
Michigan fired Sherrone Moore for cause after confirming he had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. His tenure will be remembered mostly for emotional press conferences and far too many punts. In reality, he was a placeholder while the program waited out multiple NCAA inquiries following Jim Harbaugh’s controversial success.
Even though the timing is late in the hiring cycle, Michigan’s job is elite. Only a few programs in the country can claim to be better. The Wolverines went 9-3 with Moore proof enough that this is a top-tier position. Big-time jobs draw big-time coaches, regardless of when they open.
When Alabama had to replace Nick Saban in mid-January two years ago, they pulled in the head coach of the national runner-up. That’s the level Michigan should be aiming for.
Which brings us back to Kalen DeBoer. He’s the gold standard for a late-cycle hire. Michigan should find someone who surpasses that level or simply pursue DeBoer himself. If Alabama loses early in the playoff, frustrated fans could become restless, and DeBoer might welcome a move. Ann Arbor offers strong resources, high-end facilities, and the backing of billionaire booster Larry Ellison, whose growing wealth only amplifies Michigan’s recruiting muscle.
Other names? Marcus Freeman could be worth exploring even if he played at Ohio State, that could be useful insight. He’s unlikely to leave Notre Dame except for a few elite opportunities, but Michigan should at least make the call. As for Brian Kelly: no thanks. His results at LSU don’t justify Michigan lowering its standards.
Michigan’s roster is stocked with talent, including a top-five recruiting class and former No. 1 quarterback recruit Bryce Underwood. But Moore’s offense was dreadful against quality opponents scoring just 35 combined points in losses to Oklahoma, USC, and Ohio State.
Michigan firing Moore for cause freed them from a buyout and accelerated a decision that probably would’ve happened a year from now anyway. Yes, the move comes slightly late for ideal hiring conditions, but the job is strong enough that timing shouldn’t matter.
The mission is simple: aim above Kalen DeBoer. If you can’t, then hire him.
