JUST IN: WVU Women’s Basketball Bolsters Roster with Key Additions of Riley Makalusky and Carter McCray…
Morgantown, WV – April 28, 2025 — In a decisive move to strengthen its roster ahead of the upcoming NCAA women’s basketball season, West Virginia University has secured commitments from two promising players: Riley Makalusky, a versatile wing from Butler University, and Carter McCray, a rising talent whose addition signals a new era of intensity and depth for the Mountaineers.
WVU head coach Mark Kellogg made the announcement Monday morning, emphasizing the importance of building a competitive and balanced roster that aligns with the program’s long-term vision. “These two additions bring a great mix of experience, athleticism, and potential to our squad,” Kellogg said. “We’re excited to see how they integrate and elevate our team on and off the court.”
Riley Makalusky Brings Experience and Versatility
A 6-foot wing, Riley Makalusky is transferring to WVU after a strong freshman campaign at Butler, where she averaged 9.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. Known for her scoring efficiency and ability to stretch the floor, Makalusky was one of the top young players in the Big East last season. Her ability to play both on the perimeter and in transition makes her a valuable asset to WVU’s up-tempo style.
Originally from Noblesville, Indiana, Makalusky was a four-star recruit out of high school, earning multiple offers from Power Five programs. Her decision to transfer to WVU comes at a time when the program is looking to rebound from a competitive but injury-riddled season.
“I’m really excited for this next chapter,” Makalusky said in a statement. “Coach Kellogg’s system fits my style, and I’m ready to contribute wherever I can.”
Carter McCray: A Promising Newcomer
While less known to the national spotlight, Carter McCray is turning heads behind the scenes. A dynamic and athletic guard/forward hybrid, McCray has shown flashes of elite potential, particularly on the defensive end. Though details about McCray’s previous team have yet to be fully disclosed, sources close to the program describe her as a “gritty competitor” with a high basketball IQ and tremendous upside.
Coach Kellogg noted McCray’s energy and commitment to improvement as key reasons for her addition to the roster. “Carter has a motor that doesn’t stop. She’s a selfless player who does the little things right—rebounding, defense, making the extra pass. Her presence is going to be felt immediately,” Kellogg added.
Looking Ahead
With the departure of several upperclassmen and the uncertainty surrounding next season’s rotation, the arrival of Makalusky and McCray provides much-needed depth and competition in key positions. The Mountaineers are expected to focus on player development this offseason, hoping to make a deeper push in the Big 12 and earn a return to the NCAA tournament.
Fans can expect both players to suit up for WVU in the upcoming fall, with official team workouts scheduled to begin in early June.
As the Mountaineers continue to retool their lineup, these two signings mark a significant step forward for a program determined to reclaim its place among the nation’s elite.
