JUST IN: North Carolina Set to Hire Brian Belichick as Safeties Coach.

The University of North Carolina is expected to hire Brian Belichick as its safeties coach, a source confirmed to ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Saturday. This move will reunite him with his father, Bill Belichick, who was recently appointed as the Tar Heels’ head coach, and his brother, Steve Belichick, the team’s defensive coordinator.

Brian Belichick spent the past five seasons as the safeties coach for the New England Patriots before leaving in January. His tenure with the Patriots lasted nine years, beginning as a personnel assistant in 2016 before transitioning to a coaching assistant role from 2017 to 2019. He was then promoted to safeties coach in 2020, a position he held until the end of the 2023 season.

Now, he joins a North Carolina staff undergoing a significant transformation under his father’s leadership. His brother, Steve Belichick, brings extensive experience to the defensive unit after spending 12 years as a defensive assistant with the Patriots and serving as Washington’s defensive coordinator in 2024.

The Belichick family’s presence at North Carolina is expected to bring a wealth of NFL experience to the program, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. With Brian overseeing the safeties and Steve leading the defense, the Tar Heels are positioning themselves for a major defensive overhaul.

This hire marks another step in the Belichick-led rebuild at North Carolina, as the team looks to establish itself as a defensive powerhouse. The move was first reported by 247 Sports.
