John McEnroe believes two main factors will determine Emma Raducanu’s future success: surrounding herself with the right support team and maintaining her physical health.
This clay season has been Raducanu’s most successful to date, with a career-best seven wins on the surface. However, her momentum hit a wall when she was convincingly beaten by world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, losing 6-1, 6-2 a match Raducanu had previously described as a good benchmark.
Since her stunning 2021 US Open triumph, Raducanu has yet to capture another title or reach a final. While she has shown signs of development, a significant breakthrough continues to elude her. Her recent loss to Swiatek highlighted the gap she still needs to close.
After Raducanu’s second-round exit at Roland Garros, tennis great John McEnroe shared his perspective on the young Brit’s career trajectory.
McEnroe’s advice: Build the right team and prioritize health
“She still seems to be dealing with injuries now and then, and assembling the right team around her has been an ongoing challenge,” McEnroe told Tennis365. “I’m not sure why that is I haven’t spoken to her personally. I’ve only met her a few times. But I wish her well. Anyone who wins a Grand Slam you want to see them do well consistently.”
“For me, the key is getting the right setup so you can focus on being healthy and physically ready. That allows you to compete consistently at the top level. That’s what it comes down to. I’m not sure where she currently stands on that.”
Despite some progress like reaching her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal in Miami Raducanu is still seeking a major result that could reignite her career.
With grass being her preferred surface, Raducanu is slated to compete in four events on the lawns this summer. Whether the grass-court swing can spark a turnaround for the 22 year old remains to be seen.
