As speculation swirls around West Virginia’s next head coach, former and current players are making their voices heard. While Athletic Director Wren Baker will ultimately make the call, there’s growing backing for an in-house candidate Chester Frazier.
Former WVU forward John Flowers took to X to advocate for Frazier, stating, “The most logical thing to do would be to retain Chester Frazier, who is overqualified to be the head coach.” Current Mountaineer guard Sencire Harris has also publicly supported Frazier multiple times since Darian DeVries’ departure.
However, hiring Frazier would go against Baker’s usual approach of selecting a coach with prior head coaching experience. While not a strict requirement, a proven track record is typically a major factor in his decisions.
Frazier joined West Virginia’s staff last spring after spending four years as an assistant under Brad Underwood at Illinois. When asked about internal candidates, Baker remained open to the possibility. “We have a lot of guys on staff internally, and you guys know I never talk about candidates,” he told reporters Wednesday. “But if somebody raises their hand and wants us to at least look at them, I think we probably would. You listen to all of your stakeholders appropriately, but ultimately, my job is to find the best coach for the program over the long term.”
With strong player support and a solid coaching resume, Frazier has emerged as a serious contender. Now, it’s up to Baker to determine if he’s the right fit for the program’s future.
