Joan Cronan Celebrates Pat Summitt’s 1,000th Win and Receives WBCA’s Betty F. Jaynes Lifetime Achievement Award

In a momentous celebration of both individual achievement and unwavering mentorship, Joan Cronan, former athletic director at the University of Tennessee, was honored with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) Betty F. Jaynes Lifetime Achievement Award during a special event that highlighted one of the most iconic milestones in collegiate sports history—Pat Summitt’s 1,000th win.

Pat Summitt, the legendary head coach of the Lady Vols basketball team, etched her name into the record books on February 19, 2011, when her team triumphed over the University of Georgia to mark her 1,000th career win, becoming the first Division I coach—male or female—to achieve such an incredible feat. The milestone sent shockwaves through the sports world and cemented Summitt’s legacy as one of the greatest coaches in the history of college basketball.

In the lead-up to this milestone achievement, Joan Cronan was a driving force behind Summitt’s success. As athletic director, Cronan had an intimate view of Summitt’s dedication, passion, and ability to inspire not just her team, but an entire university and fanbase. The two women shared a special bond, built on mutual respect and an understanding of each other’s commitment to excellence.

On the day of the 1,000th win, Cronan was present to witness the culmination of years of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication. Standing side by side with Pat, Cronan reflected on the significance of the win, both for Summitt and for women’s athletics as a whole. “It’s not just a win for Pat, it’s a win for women in sports. What she has done for women’s basketball and athletics is immeasurable,” Cronan remarked, her voice tinged with emotion. “She’s not just a coach; she’s a trailblazer.”

While Summitt garnered well-deserved praise for her achievement, Cronan was also recognized for her critical role in supporting and nurturing Summitt’s career and the success of the Lady Vols program. Cronan’s leadership as athletic director was instrumental in securing the resources, facilities, and public support that allowed Summitt’s teams to thrive. Under her watch, the University of Tennessee became a powerhouse in women’s college basketball.

In recognition of her decades-long commitment to advancing women’s athletics, Cronan was presented with the Betty F. Jaynes Lifetime Achievement Award by the WBCA. Named after the organization’s founding executive director, the award is given to those who have made an extraordinary impact on the growth and development of women’s basketball. Cronan’s contributions to the sport, particularly her advocacy for women’s coaches and players, were evident in the heartfelt tribute made during the ceremony.

“Joan has been a cornerstone of women’s sports and a true champion of women’s basketball,” said WBCA President and 1999 NCAA championship coach, Kim Mulkey. “Her legacy is not just about wins and losses, but about the lives she’s touched and the opportunities she’s provided for generations of female athletes.”

Cronan’s dedication to women’s sports has spanned over five decades, and she has consistently been a voice for equality and opportunity for female athletes at all levels. Under her leadership, Tennessee became one of the most successful programs in collegiate athletics, with the Lady Vols winning numerous SEC titles and NCAA championships.

As Cronan accepted the Betty F. Jaynes Lifetime Achievement Award, she shared her appreciation for the women who paved the way for future generations of athletes and coaches, including Pat Summitt. “This award is a testament to the amazing women I’ve had the privilege to work with and learn from, especially Pat,” Cronan said. “Pat taught us all what it meant to lead with integrity, passion, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.”

The joint celebration of Pat Summitt’s 1,000th win and Joan Cronan’s lifetime of service to women’s sports was a fitting tribute to the legacies of two women who changed the landscape of college athletics forever. Through their leadership, dedication, and friendship, Summitt and Cronan set the bar for what it means to be a trailblazer in women’s basketball and sports in general.
