Jalen Ramsey Wants to Play on West Coast; Will 49ers Trade for him?

Will the 49ers pony up for him? Stay tuned.

The San Francisco 49ers could land a major addition this offseason, as Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey is reportedly on the trade market and prefers a move back to the West Coast, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“Jalen Ramsey will be traded,” Schefter said. “I expect it to happen before training camp begins. We’ll see where he ends up, but he’d like to return to the West Coast maybe to the Rams, Chargers, or a similar team.”

Ramsey, who played for the Rams between 2019 and 2022, has strong ties to Los Angeles. However, with the Rams holding just $21.8 million in cap space and Ramsey owed over $25 million in 2025, a reunion may be financially unrealistic. The Chargers, with $27.5 million in space, may also be unable to afford him.

That leaves the 49ers as a logical destination. With more than $46 million in available cap space second-highest in the league they’re financially positioned to absorb Ramsey’s contract. Given Miami’s urgency to offload his salary, San Francisco might only need to part with a fifth-round pick to get the deal done.

The main question is whether the 49ers are willing to invest $25 million in a 30-year-old defender. Still, Ramsey played all 17 games last season and earned a higher Pro Football Focus grade than any 49ers defensive back, making him a clear albeit pricey upgrade.

Will San Francisco pull the trigger? Time will tell.
