After the Indiana Fever’s dramatic 99-93 comeback win over the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena, the team shared an update on guard Sophie Cunningham, who had to be helped off the floor early in the game. Head coach Stephanie White said there were no further medical details yet but confirmed Cunningham is scheduled for an MRI on Monday, likely once the team returns to Indianapolis.
“Seeing the way she went down, how much pain she was in, your first thought is, ‘Holy (expletive).’ Then you just want her to calm down, regroup, and from there it’s about figuring out solutions. That’s how I cope by moving straight into problem-solving. Thankfully, this group is special, and I’m grateful for them,” White explained.
The injury occurred when Sun guard Bria Hartley’s momentum carried her into Cunningham’s lower right leg as Cunningham was sliding over defensively. Cunningham immediately grabbed at her right knee, crying out in pain as trainers rushed to her side. Teammates surrounded her before she was escorted to the locker room, where she was quickly ruled out for the rest of the contest.
The setback adds to Indiana’s already depleted backcourt. Caitlin Clark remains sidelined with a groin injury expected to keep her out for a month, while Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald have already been lost for the season. The Fever, however, do have a short reprieve with four days off before their next game on Aug. 22 at home against Minnesota.
