Incoming West Virginia guard ruled eligible for the upcoming season

The West Virginia men’s basketball team got a boost this week as transfer Chance Moore was granted eligibility by the NCAA for the 2025–26 season through the waiver process. While this outcome was largely anticipated likely influencing his recruitment it still removes a layer of uncertainty for new head coach Ross Hodge as the program prepares for the upcoming season.

Moore transfers in from St. Bonaventure, where he averaged 13 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game last season. Though cleared to play, he will be required to sit out the first five games of the regular season due to the unique nature of his waiver case.

Morgantown will be Moore’s fourth stop in his college basketball career. He began at Arkansas in 2021–22, where he saw limited action, then spent two productive seasons at Missouri State, consistently scoring in double figures. At St. Bonaventure this past year, Moore emerged as a starter and key contributor, finishing as the team’s second-leading scorer, top rebounder, and leader in blocked shots, helping guide the Bonnies to a 22–12 record.

Listed at 6-foot-6, Moore is known for his defensive abilities and rebounding, traits that should fit well in Hodge’s defensively focused system.

Interestingly, Moore is already familiar with the WVU Coliseum. In the 2023 season opener, while playing for Missouri State, he scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in a loss to the Mountaineers.

Bringing in a seasoned and versatile player like Moore could significantly benefit Hodge, who built his reputation on defense at North Texas and now faces the competitive grind of the Big 12 Conference. As the saying goes, defense travels and Hodge hopes it will follow him from Denton to Morgantown.

Offensively, Moore adds more than just defense. He scored 15 or more points in 14 games last season. While he’s not a strong three-point shooter, he compensates with a gritty and aggressive approach that allows him to find ways to score.

Moore is one of several impactful transfers joining WVU this year, all looking to make their mark as Hodge kicks off his first season at the helm.
