Just a week after being chosen as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft by the Dallas Wings, Paige Bueckers bid a heartfelt farewell to UConn in an emotional message shared on social media.
“Where do I even begin, UConn Nation,” Bueckers wrote on Tuesday. “These last five years have been some of the most meaningful, challenging, and blessed of my life. The friendships, unforgettable memories, and spiritual growth I’ve experienced have changed me forever.”
Bueckers played five seasons for UConn, ending her standout collegiate journey with her first national title earlier this month. Her post included several photos, beginning with a touching hug shared with coach Geno Auriemma during the championship game after she exited the court for the final time as a college player. Other images featured the championship trophy, fans, and her teammates.
“The love and support have meant the world to me. I couldn’t have made it without them,” the Minnesota native continued. “To all my teammates and everyone involved in the program, you are family for life. Storrs, Connecticut will always be my second home, and I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything. I’m forever grateful, thank you.”
Bueckers first captured national attention with a phenomenal freshman season that earned her multiple Player of the Year honors. Despite dealing with injuries during her time at UConn, she made a triumphant return and led the team to a national championship in her final college game.
Her farewell post was met with an outpouring of support from fans and former teammates. While her UConn chapter has come to a close, it’s clear she’ll always be cherished in Storrs. The UConn women’s basketball account even commented, “You’ll always have a home here.”
Bueckers and her fellow Dallas rookies will be officially introduced by the Wings on Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET. The team’s season kicks off on May 16.
