WVU Baseball Aims For More Consistency On Mound With Recent Transfer Addition Dawson Montesa, who recently transferred to the Mountaineers from Adelphi University, will look to address a major area of need for WVU.

It’s clear that if there’s one area where WVU baseball needs the most improvement this offseason, it’s their pitching staff.

In particular, the team has struggled with consistently throwing strikes. During the 2025 season, the Mountaineers ranked 126th nationally in walks allowed per game, surrendering 270 free passes an average of 4.55 walks per outing.

To address that issue, WVU made a notable addition just over a week ago through the transfer portal by landing Dawson Montesa a Division II All-American and the East Region Pitcher of the Year. Montesa is now the third D2 pitcher to join the program this offseason, joining Ian Korn and Chansen Cole.

Montesa comes to Morgantown from Adelphi University, bringing a proven track record of control and strike-throwing. What stands out most in his 2025 stat line is his ability to limit walks while still maintaining high strikeout totals. In 72.1 innings, the right-hander struck out 105 batters while issuing just 24 walks.

That’s a major improvement from his freshman campaign, where he allowed 29 walks across 44 innings. The fact that he pitched significantly more innings in 2025 while cutting down his walks shows both maturity and progress in his command.

Another standout stat from Montesa’s recent season is opponents’ batting average he held hitters to a mere .207. His combination of a low walk rate and strong opponent batting average made him a dominant force in Adelphi’s rotation, as reflected by his impressive 8-1 record and stellar 1.99 ERA.

With his arrival, WVU is hoping Montesa can help stabilize a pitching staff that has lacked consistency and control in recent seasons.
