Good News: West Virginia women’s basketball lands Big 12 starter in major transfer portal signing.

West Virginia women’s basketball continued to make waves in the transfer portal on Tuesday by landing a major addition from within the Big 12. The Mountaineers picked up Gigi Cooke, a starting guard from conference rival Houston, signaling another big win in their offseason recruitment efforts.

According to Talia Goodman of Field of 68, Cooke is transferring to West Virginia after a strong sophomore campaign with the Cougars, where she appeared in 27 games and started 22. She averaged 12.4 points per game, making her the team’s second-leading scorer. The 5-foot-8 guard led Houston in scoring in nine games and had a standout 25-point performance against a Top 10-ranked TCU team. She also knocked down 31 three-pointers on the season, shooting 32% from beyond the arc.

Cooke began her college career at Maryland, playing in 25 games as a freshman. A native of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, she was a four-star recruit from Bishop McNamara High School.

Cooke becomes the second player to transfer to WVU from a Big 12 opponent this offseason, following Loghan Johnson from Texas Tech. Altogether, she is the fifth transfer joining the Mountaineers this year, alongside Carter McCray (Northern Kentucky/Wisconsin), Riley Makalusky (Butler), and Kierra Wheeler (Norfolk State).
