UConn Huskies’ legendary coach Geno Auriemma stirred controversy on March 28 by criticizing the NCAA for his team’s grueling travel schedule during the NCAA Tournament, which required them to take two cross-country flights in one week.
“Whoever came up with this Super Regional format and I know who they are ruined the game,” Auriemma stated. “Half the country has no chance to attend in person, but you’re making billions off TV. Well, actually, you’re notthat’s the men’s tournament.” His remarks sparked widespread discussion in the sports world.
Ahead of UConn’s Final Four matchup against UCLA, Auriemma reinforced his stance, calling for a scheduling overhaul. “We need to change the schedule,” he said in an interview shared by the March Madness YouTube account. “We have to finish way earlier so we don’t arrive Tuesday night after traveling 3,000 miles, practice for two days, and then play the biggest game of the year on Friday at 9:30 p.m. And we were the last team to play on Monday.”
He also suggested that the women’s tournament might benefit from finishing on a different weekend than the men’s, potentially wrapping up a week earlier. “We adjust for conference tournaments, so why not for this?” he questioned. Additionally, Auriemma emphasized the need to study what works in the men’s tournament and consider whether similar improvements could be applied to the women’s side, rather than clinging to tradition.
His repeated insistence on changing the schedule highlights his frustration and determination to see reforms. Hopefully, UConn’s demanding travel doesn’t impact their performance against UCLA on Friday.
