Fremont’s Juan Gonzalez officially earns Gatorade track and field honor.
Though the recognition came as no surprise, it became official on Wednesday when Juan Gonzalez was named the state’s Gatorade Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year. While this marks his first time earning the award for track and field, it is his third overall honor from Gatorade, having won the cross country distinction in each of the past two seasons.
Gonzalez capped his high school career with a state meet performance that ranks among the most dominant in Nebraska history. He won Class A titles in the 800, 1,600, and 3,200 meters, and anchored Fremont’s first-place 4×800-meter relay team. All of his victories except for the 800 earned All-Class Gold recognition, highlighting his unmatched versatility and endurance. His 40 point effort was a key factor in Fremont’s team success and is rarely matched at the championship level.
Outside the state meet, Gonzalez continued to elevate his profile. He broke the Nebraska state 1,600-meter record at the Heartland Athletic Conference meet, running an impressive 4:03.08. On the national stage, he delivered the fastest high school 2-mile time in the country this year with an 8:47.06 performance at the Brooks PR Invitational. Most recently, he placed fifth in the mile at the Nike Outdoor Nationals, clocking 4:05.08 to earn All-American honors.
Gonzalez, who is set to compete for the University of Oregon, becomes the first athlete since Millard West’s Seth Hirsch in 2016–17 to sweep both the state’s Gatorade Cross Country and Track and Field awards.
