Fever’s Sophie Cunningham jokes about Caitlin Clark and her demeanor: ‘Dude, you’re a dweeb’

The 29-year-old point guard noted her teammate's talent, but also hinted at the good bond they've generated in their first year together at Indiana.

Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark aren’t just close friends they’re also two of the five Indiana Fever players sidelined for the rest of the season. Yet, whether on or off the court, they continue to draw attention.

Stephanie White’s squad has had to adapt throughout the Playoffs, while fans have kept a close eye on the two stars. Many were struck by Cunningham’s remarks about her 23-year-old teammate. Clark’s second WNBA season was cut short before the All-Star break due to quadriceps and groin injuries, limiting her to only 13 games.

Cunningham’s own year ended on August 17 when she tore the MCL in her right knee during a matchup with the Connecticut Sun, closing her rookie Fever campaign after 30 appearances. Alongside them, Aari McDonald, Sydney Colson, and Chloe Bibby also remain out for the rest of the season.

Despite the setbacks, Cunningham and Clark’s friendship has grown stronger. On the “Old Man and Three” podcast, Cunningham praised her teammate: “She’s just a big kid… so phenomenal and elite at what she does. A generational talent. I don’t even need to hype her anymore.”

She went on to describe their playful dynamic: “She loves hard, but at the end of the day she’s like one of my little cousins. Same age, same goofy energy. I just tell her, ‘You’re such a dweeb, the biggest dork I’ve ever met. Somehow, though, you can shoot from deep and pass like crazy.’”

Meanwhile, the Fever prepare to break the 1-1 deadlock against the Las Vegas Aces. Returning to Gainbridge Fieldhouse for Games 3 and 4 on September 26 and 28, the team is aiming to punch their ticket to the Playoff Finals.
