Fever must avoid being Sun’s savior in second game without Caitlin Clark

The Indiana Fever fell short in their season opener against the Washington Mystics, losing 83-77 without star guard Caitlin Clark, who is sidelined for at least two weeks with a left quad injury. However, that two-week estimate might be overly hopeful.

Wednesday’s game highlighted the team’s ongoing struggles, with inconsistency across the board. One bright spot was veteran DeWanna Bonner, who delivered her strongest performance yet in a Fever uniform. Still, the team will need more collective effort if they want to succeed while Clark is out.

Fortunately, the upcoming schedule is relatively favorable. The next four opponents have a combined record of just 2-12. First up: a home game against the winless Connecticut Sun.

Despite their poor record, the Sun can’t be underestimated especially given how disjointed the Fever looked in their last outing. The absence of Clark, who excels at setting a fast tempo, has clearly disrupted the team’s rhythm. Her presence on the floor has a noticeable impact, and without her, the pace and fluidity are lacking.

Playing at home adds pressure. Though Clark won’t be suiting up, Friday’s game may be the most crucial of her absence. The team needs to make a strong statement in front of the home crowd and bounce back from a shaky performance.

Another loss, particularly to a team Clark previously played for, could spark doubts about head coach Stephanie White. In tough stretches, scrutiny over coaching choices such as rotations and strategy tends to intensify. The expectations for this Fever squad are sky-high, yet the results so far have been underwhelming.

That said, it’s important to remember this is still a developing group. The players and coaching staff have had limited time together, and building cohesion doesn’t happen overnight.

Still, missing a game-changing talent like Clark poses serious challenges. If the team doesn’t adapt well, it could cost them. The pressure is on against Connecticut, a team desperate for its first win making them a potentially dangerous opponent. The Fever will need to be focused and sharp to avoid falling into a trap.
