The ‘fearless’ player who’s emerging for Alabama football.

Alabama football may finally have clarity on the most pressing depth-chart question in its backfield who will play the critical role behind starter Jam Miller.

Since spring practices, Miller has separated himself as the lead option in the Crimson Tide’s ground game. He brings explosiveness, vision, and an ability to finish runs that the coaching staff has praised repeatedly. But the SEC season is long and unforgiving, and no Alabama back can shoulder the load alone. That has placed extra importance on finding the right complement to Miller, a player who can both spell him effectively and take on expanded responsibilities if injuries arise.

Early in camp, several candidates rotated through the role. Freshmen Justice Haynes and Daniel Hill showcased flashes, while veterans Jamarion Miller and Richard Young each tried to stake their claim. Ultimately, however, it’s Haynes who has begun to separate himself from the pack. Coaches have noted his maturity, sharp instincts in pass protection, and reliable hands out of the backfield. Those traits give him value in both early-down rushing situations and third-down passing packages.

Nick Saban has long emphasized the need for versatility at running back, and Haynes appears to check those boxes. His ability to grind between the tackles yet also flex out as a receiving threat could make Alabama’s offense more dynamic. Just as important, teammates and staff have lauded his work ethic, suggesting he’s ready to take on meaningful snaps despite his youth.

While Jam Miller remains the centerpiece, Alabama has likely found its “next man up” in Haynes. For a program defined by depth at skill positions, that answer could prove pivotal as the Tide chase another SEC title.
