The Favorite Son Returns: WVU legend Pat White joins Rich Rodriguez’s Mountaineer staff.

Nearly two months ago, Rich Rodriguez took on the role of head coach for West Virginia football for the second time in his career. Around the same period, WVU legend Pat White who played three seasons under Rodriguez in Morgantown expressed interest in returning to his alma mater in a coaching capacity. Now, the man widely regarded as the greatest quarterback in Mountaineers history is officially coming home.

Speculation began early Wednesday on the ‘Locked On West Virginia’ podcast that White had been seen in the football facility in Morgantown and was likely rejoining the program. Later that day, West Virginia confirmed that White would be joining the staff as the Assistant Quarterbacks Coach and Assistant to the Head Coach. He will work alongside Quarterbacks Coach Rhett Rodriguez, who was still in elementary school when his father coached White to two BCS bowl victories in the 2000s.

“It’s truly special to have Pat White back in Morgantown as part of our football coaching staff,” Rodriguez said. “He played a key role in some of the biggest wins in program history and will be a valuable presence in our quarterback room. Pat and I have been through so much together, and I’m proud of the coach and mentor he has become.”

White, speaking on the *Pacman Jones Show* in December, shared his enthusiasm about the opportunity. “It would be great to be back in those mountains, man. Especially with my guy Rich. Morgantown is like a second home. I love coaching football, and to have a chance to work with the man who helped me make a name for myself while mentoring another young quarterback to do the same and finally bringing that long-awaited national championship to Morgantown… it would be an honor to be part of his staff.”

While Rodriguez’s return to WVU has been likened to the ‘Parable of the Prodigal Son’, Pat White is undeniably West Virginia football’s favorite son. White ranks second all-time in FBS history for rushing yards by a quarterback, amassing 4,480 yards. He led the Mountaineers to a 35-8 record as their starting quarterback and helped secure four straight bowl victories, including the 2006 Sugar Bowl, 2007 Gator Bowl, 2008 Fiesta Bowl, and 2008 Meineke Car Care Bowl. He later played professionally in both the NFL and CFL.

With seven years of coaching experience at the collegiate and professional levels, White most recently worked as an offensive assistant for the Los Angeles Chargers from 2022 to 2023. In 2024, he served as an independent skills trainer and coach. His prior coaching roles include Pass Game Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at Campbell (2022), Interim Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at Alabama State (2021), Running Backs Coach at USF (2020), and Quarterbacks Coach at Alcorn State (2018-19).
