One key takeaway from this year’s UAE Tour? Never assume the so-called “flat” stages will be dull. Stage 5 proved just that, with none other than race leader Tadej Pogačar taking center stage. Joined by his Slovenian teammate Domen Novak, the world champion launched an unexpected breakaway, leaving analysts puzzled about his true intentions.
Was there a strategic purpose behind his attack? That remains uncertain. Former pro Tom Danielson offered his perspective on X, suggesting that Pogačar simply loves racing in a way few others do. “For many riders, training and competing feel like work, but he genuinely enjoys the process. This mindset is a big reason why he keeps improving,” Danielson explained.
Beyond just enthusiasm, these unpredictable moves make Pogačar a nightmare for his rivals. “I think he wants to send a message: ‘You think you understand me, but you really don’t.’ He knows people are trying to mimic him, so he keeps them guessing,” Danielson added.
Despite his attack, Pogačar likely never pushed himself to the limit. “What started as a joke probably felt more like a training session to him. With 11 breakaway companions and a teammate, he controlled his effort, focusing on short bursts rather than an all-out effort almost like an ideal Saturday group ride,” Danielson noted.
Another standout aspect? Pogačar’s willingness to collaborate with his breakaway companions rather than sitting back. “He’s the undisputed boss of the peloton, but he leads by example. Instead of exploiting his position, he works alongside others, showing both dominance and humility,” Danielson concluded.
My thoughts on Tadej’s breakaway on stage 5 of the UAE Tour:
1. The guy just loves bike racing and views it as enjoyable as most of us view our weekly group ride. I truly believe this is one factor why he continues to improve with every year. The reality is many of his rivals…
