DONE DEAL: Former South Carolina Guard Morris Ugusuk Commits to West Virginia University with Five-Year Contract…

May 9, 2025 | Morgantown, WV — In a significant move that could reshape West Virginia University’s backcourt dynamics, former South Carolina guard Morris Ugusuk has officially announced his commitment to join the Mountaineers, signing a five-year contract with the program. The announcement marks a major recruiting win for WVU and head coach Darian DeVries as the team looks to rebuild and compete at the highest level of NCAA Division I basketball.

Ugusuk, a 6-foot-4 guard originally from Helsinki, Finland, spent his freshman season with the South Carolina Gamecocks, where he showcased impressive potential with his athleticism, defensive instincts, and court vision. Though he saw limited minutes, Ugusuk made a notable impact off the bench, averaging 4.3 points, 2.1 assists, and 1.7 rebounds per game in 17 appearances. His ability to play both on and off the ball made him a valued rotation piece under South Carolina head coach Lamont Paris.

Citing a desire for more playing time, a stronger developmental environment, and a new challenge, Ugusuk entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier this offseason. After receiving interest from several Power Five programs, he chose West Virginia as the next step in his collegiate career.

“I’m excited to officially be part of Mountaineer Nation,” Ugusuk said in a statement released by the university. “This is a fresh start and a huge opportunity for me. I’ve always admired the culture and toughness of WVU basketball. I’m ready to work hard and contribute in any way I can.”

The addition of Ugusuk comes at a pivotal time for West Virginia, as the program undergoes a period of transition following a turbulent 2023-24 season. With DeVries entering his second year at the helm, WVU has emphasized recruiting versatile, high-IQ players who can help stabilize and elevate the program. Ugusuk’s commitment aligns with that vision.

“Morris is an incredibly talented young man with a bright future,” Coach DeVries said. “His international background brings a unique perspective to our locker room. He defends at a high level, competes with energy, and has a great feel for the game. We’re thrilled to welcome him and his family to Morgantown.”

The five-year contract — an unusually long commitment for a college player — reflects WVU’s confidence in Ugusuk’s long-term development. While NCAA athletes typically do not sign formal “contracts,” the university confirmed the arrangement includes a full scholarship through his remaining eligibility, with provisions for graduate studies and NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) opportunities that could extend beyond four years.

Ugusuk becomes the third major addition to WVU’s roster this offseason, joining transfers from the Big Ten and the American Athletic Conference. With the Mountaineers aiming to return to NCAA Tournament contention, fans are hopeful that the Finnish guard will bring both grit and spark to the program.

West Virginia is expected to begin summer training in June, with Ugusuk set to arrive on campus later this month. His debut in the gold and blue is anticipated for the team’s opening exhibition games in October.
