Novak Djokovic reflects on entering tennis amid Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal dominance.
Djokovic is widely regarded as the greatest men’s tennis player in history. His unmatched list of achievements backs that claim. Among his accomplishments, the most significant is holding the most Grand Slam titles a record that once belonged to Federer, then Nadal, and now firmly to Djokovic.
Two decades since their epic rivalry began, the trio is more open about their shared journey. They recently appeared together at Nadal’s ceremony on Court Philippe Chatrier, reminiscing on their legacies.
Speaking to Swiss outlet 20 Minuten, Djokovic revealed feeling like an outsider during his early years. Unlike Federer and Nadal, he said, he didn’t receive the same fan affection, often feeling like an “unwanted child.” Despite attempts to change himself to gain public approval, nothing worked.
He believes his sudden emergence and confidence to challenge the established duo made him less likable to many fans.
“I wasn’t supposed to be there,” he admitted.
Despite their fierce competition, Djokovic said he never harbored hate for either rival. He respects both but shared he’s always had a closer relationship with Nadal than Federer.
With Nadal and Federer retired, Djokovic continues chasing history, now eyeing a potential 25th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.
