DeWanna Bonner’s Role in Caitlin Clark Controversy Resurfaces..

DeWanna Bonner, who is no longer part of the Indiana Fever, played just nine games this season before stepping away. The veteran forward, a two-time WNBA champion, signed with Indiana as a free agent but struggled to find her place, receiving reduced playing time and being used only as a bench player. She eventually parted ways with the team, stating the situation “wasn’t the right fit.”

This development comes a year after a tense moment involving Bonner’s former team, the Connecticut Sun, and the Fever. During a game between the two teams, DiJonai Carrington now with the Dallas Wings accidentally poked Caitlin Clark in the eye while attempting to block a pass.

Sports journalist Christine Brennan questioned Carrington after the game, referencing the incident. “Did you intend to hit Caitlin in the eye?” Brennan asked. Carrington denied it was intentional, saying she didn’t even realize she had made contact. “That’s not the type of player I am,” she said.

Brennan pressed further, asking if Carrington and teammate Marina Mabrey laughed about the incident later during the game. Carrington again rejected that claim, insisting she couldn’t have laughed about something she didn’t know happened.

The episode was later documented in Brennan’s book On Her Game: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women’s Sports, where she revealed Bonner had confronted her after she spoke with Carrington. As Brennan recalled, Bonner approached her and said, “You disrespected my teammate.” Despite Brennan’s attempt to introduce herself, Bonner calmly repeated similar remarks multiple times: “You attacked my teammate.”

Brennan noted that while the exchange was tense, it remained civil. “Bonner never raised her voice, nor did I,” she wrote, describing it as a typical interaction between a journalist and an athlete during moments of professional disagreement.
