Dawn Staley States Ta’Niya Latson ‘Superpower’ After South Carolina Transfer..

South Carolina Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley is stoked about new transfer Ta'Niya Latson's game.

One of the most talented players to enter the NCAA transfer portal following the 2024–25 women’s college basketball season was former Florida State guard Ta’Niya Latson, who led the nation in scoring with 25.2 points per game.

The South Carolina Gamecocks quickly emerged as frontrunners to land Latson, thanks in part to her connection with Gamecocks star Raven Johnson. On April 8, Latson announced via Instagram that she had committed to head coach Dawn Staley’s program. The move is a significant one for South Carolina, adding a dynamic offensive creator to a team that lacked that dimension last season.

Latson’s transfer became official on April 16, when South Carolina formally introduced her. In a statement, Staley praised Latson’s game and leadership.

“Ta’Niya has made a name for herself in college basketball, and her achievements speak volumes,” Staley said. “But what makes her special isn’t just her scoring—she has an elite ability to create opportunities for her teammates, which makes her a dual threat that opponents will struggle with. Ta’Niya is not only a great leader but also a fierce competitor. We’re proud to be a part of her journey.”

Staley also took to X (formerly Twitter) to welcome Latson, posting: “Welcome welcome welcome Ta’Niya!! Thank you for joining our Gamecock family! I would say @GamecockWBB FAMs activate but you already gave her your special welcome! We can’t wait to get started!!”

Latson’s addition adds an exciting new layer to the Gamecocks, and it’ll be intriguing to see how she meshes with the roster in the 2025–26 season.
