Dawn Staley ends South Carolina guard Maddy McDaniel’s suspension after 3 games.

South Carolina coach Dawn Staley has reinstated guard Maddy McDaniel after a three-game suspension.

The program announced on Nov. 20 that McDaniel was back with the team, sharing a practice photo and noting that all 10 players on the roster were active again.

McDaniel, a sophomore, had been suspended since Nov. 11 for an unspecified reason. She had already missed one earlier game due to a knee-to-knee injury suffered in the season opener against Grand Canyon, bringing her total absences to four. She wore a brace on the sideline on Nov. 7 and Staley had indicated she likely wouldn’t play against Clemson the next day, saying McDaniel was still rehabbing.

With McDaniel out, No. 2 South Carolina (5-0) was reduced to nine available players but still went undefeated, most recently defeating Winthrop 106–56 on Nov. 19. The Gamecocks next face Queens on Nov. 23.

The team had announced her suspension via X just an hour before tipoff against Clemson, a game South Carolina won 65–37. Staley commented on the suspension only once, immediately after that matchup.

As a freshman, McDaniel averaged 3.1 points in 11 minutes per game off the bench. This season, she is expected to play a bigger role backing up starting point guard Raven Johnson. Before her injury, she scored eight points with two assists in eight minutes against Grand Canyon.
