South Carolina women’s basketball is entering a new era under head coach Dawn Staley, with several roster changes that could shape another championship run. Staley added impactful transfers and talented freshmen to maintain the Gamecocks’ elite status.
Among the key newcomers are Madina Okot, a 6-foot-6 center from Mississippi State, and Ta’Niya Latson, last season’s national scoring leader from Florida State. Staley believes both can help elevate the program, even after losing MiLaysia Fulwiley and Sakima Walker to the transfer portal and seeing veterans Te-Hina Paopao, Sania Feagin, and Bree Hall graduate to the WNBA. Freshmen Agot Makeer and Ayla McDowell also joined the roster.
During SEC Media Days on October 14 in Birmingham, Staley appeared with Tessa Johnson, Joyce Edwards, and Latson to preview the 2025–26 team. “We’re a little more scrappy this year,” Johnson said. “It just feels different in a good way.”
South Carolina is chasing its sixth straight Final Four and a third consecutive national title appearance. Staley, who already owns three championships and eight 30-win seasons, believes Okot could be the key difference-maker. “She’s probably the strongest player we’ve ever had,” Staley said. “She’s mobile, efficient in the paint, and can even shoot mid-range.”
With Chloe Kitts sidelined by an ACL tear, Okot and Edwards are expected to step up in the frontcourt.
Latson, who averaged 25.2 points per game last season, said she joined South Carolina for the program’s winning culture and the opportunity to grow under Staley. “Playing for Coach Staley is one of the best experiences a player can have,” Latson said. “She challenges me to be better on both ends.”
Staley praised Latson’s development, noting she’s pushing her to strengthen her mindset and expand her game beyond scoring. “At Florida State, she carried a heavy scoring load,” Staley said. “Now, we’re helping her build the other tools she’ll need for the next level.”
With Latson’s dynamic offense, Okot’s inside presence, and Staley’s proven leadership, South Carolina looks poised for another deep postseason run even amid roster changes and injuries.
