Duke is in a strong position heading into the NCAA Tournament, but injuries could play a crucial role in its championship hopes.
Freshman star Cooper Flagg suffered an ankle sprain during Duke’s win over Georgia Tech, forcing him to miss the final two games of the ACC Tournament, including the championship win over Louisville. Forward Maliq Brown also sustained a shoulder injury in the same game, sidelining him for the remainder of the tournament. Flagg’s status is particularly significant, as he’s a leading contender for National Player of the Year and a projected No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. He has been Duke’s top performer this season, averaging 18.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game.
Head coach Jon Scheyer remains optimistic about Flagg’s return for Duke’s opening game on Friday against the winner of Mount St. Mary’s vs. American. While he didn’t guarantee Flagg’s availability, Scheyer emphasized that the goal is for him to be ready. Flagg’s mother, Kelly, also reassured fans, saying he’s “feeling great,” and legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski expressed confidence that Flagg will play.

Despite Flagg’s absence in the ACC Tournament, Duke’s seeding remained unaffected. The program communicated with the selection committee to confirm his availability for March Madness. Although Duke won both the ACC regular-season and tournament titles, Auburn edged them out for the No. 1 overall seed.
Oddsmakers remain confident in Duke’s chances, as the Blue Devils hold the best odds to win the national title and reach the Final Four. If Flagg is fully healthy, Duke will be a formidable contender.
