Boston Celtics president Brad Stevens has repeatedly expressed during the offseason that the organization wanted Joe Mazzulla to remain head coach for the long term. On Friday, the team backed those words with action, announcing a multi-year contract extension for Mazzulla. While the length and financial terms were not disclosed, it marks another step in solidifying his role.
“I wouldn’t be here without my faith, my wife, and my children,” Mazzulla said, thanking the team’s ownership, Stevens’ guidance, and the staff’s support. He also expressed deep appreciation for the players he has coached over the past three seasons and reaffirmed his excitement about continuing to compete for both the Celtics and the city of Boston.
At 37, Mazzulla has led the Celtics to the playoffs in all three seasons at the helm, culminating in the franchise’s 18th NBA championship at the end of the 2023–24 season. His title run made him the youngest head coach to win the NBA Finals since Bill Russell, who was 35 when he guided Boston to victory as a player-coach in 1969.
Under his leadership, the team has secured at least 57 wins each year, surpassing 60 victories in each of the past two seasons. Though Stevens has not revealed contract specifics, Mazzulla first received an extension shortly after losing the interim label in February 2023, and Stevens confirmed in June that the coach had signed at least one other extension before this most recent deal.
