‘Camaraderie of the Duke spirit’: At Final Four weekend, Duke alumni celebrate years of…

Phoenix, AZ — As the intensity of the NCAA Final Four builds, one tradition remains as constant and passionate as the game itself: the enduring spirit of Duke alumni. Across downtown Phoenix, former Blue Devils gathered in clusters over the weekend — in hotel lobbies, restaurants, tailgate tents, and even spontaneous circles on sidewalks — to reminisce, reconnect, and reignite their love for the game that brought them together.

While Duke may not have taken the court this year, the “Duke spirit” was unmistakably present. From the signature blue apparel to chants of “Let’s go Duke!” echoing throughout the city, the bond among alumni proved as fierce as any tournament rivalry.

“There’s something about being a part of Duke that sticks with you long after graduation,” said Ashley Greene (Class of ‘04), who flew in from New York with her former roommates. “Even if it’s been years, when you’re with other alumni, it feels like coming home.”

Hosted events by the Duke Alumni Association added to the celebratory energy. A Friday evening mixer at a rooftop bar brought hundreds together, complete with highlight reels of classic Duke Final Four moments looping in the background. On Saturday, a brunch panel featured former players and coaches who shared behind-the-scenes stories from past tournaments, drawing standing ovations and emotional cheers.

John Keller (Class of ‘91), who attended his 14th Final Four this year, described the weekend as more than a sports event. “It’s a reunion, a reminder of what makes Duke unique,” he said. “It’s about values, competition, excellence, and above all, camaraderie.”

Younger alumni echoed similar sentiments, highlighting how the culture of mentorship and support has stayed strong. “I just graduated three years ago, but already I’ve got connections from the Class of ‘85 helping me with my career,” said Marcus Lin (Class of ‘21). “It’s bigger than basketball. It’s a family.”

The Duke tent at the Fan Fest served as a hub of activity, offering everything from interactive trivia games to giveaways and even a makeshift mini-court for pickup games. Alumni of all ages — some with kids in tow, others with friends from their dorm floors — shared stories of Cameron Crazies, all-nighters before big exams, and the unforgettable energy of Coach K’s era.

Though the Blue Devils weren’t competing on the hardwood this weekend, their presence was unmistakable. As the sun set over the desert skyline and fans geared up for the championship game, one thing was clear: Duke’s legacy lives on in its people.

“We may not be in the bracket,” said Greene, “but we’re always in the heart of March Madness. That’s the camaraderie of the Duke spirit.”
