Caitlin Clark off in return to Fever; Indiana tinkering with off-ball role

Fever All-Star Caitlin Clark returned to the court Wednesday for her first home game since June 24 but struggled to find her rhythm while splitting point guard duties. She shot just 4-for-12 from the field and committed four turnovers in Indiana’s loss to Golden State, dropping the team to 9-10 with four games left before the All-Star break.

“It felt good to be back out there,” said Clark, who played a season-low 25 minutes. “But our offense starts with defense, and we just weren’t sharp. They outworked us. Honestly, nobody played well today. I’m just trying to get my legs back and build up my stamina.”

Clark finished with 10 points but often played off the ball a strategy by head coach Stephanie White, who started veteran guard Sydney Colson in Clark’s place at point. Clark is still recovering from her second leg injury this season and previously missed three weeks due to a strained quad.

“I like having two ball handlers out there,” White explained. “It allows us to throw different looks at opponents. And honestly, not having Caitlin bring the ball up full-court every possession is better for her physically. We’ll keep adjusting.”

White aims to limit Clark’s minutes to around 20 per game as she regains strength. Still, there’s concern about whether Clark can fully recover without another long break. Her recent form has been concerning: in her last four games—l including Wednesday she’s shot 17-for-59 and committed 26 turnovers, with the Fever going 1-3 in that stretch.

“We’ll get it figured out,” Clark assured.
