While sidelined with a groin injury that’s kept her out of five games, Caitlin Clark recently named the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year has been experiencing the league from a different angle. This week, she took on a new role as an All-Star captain after receiving a league-high 1,293,526 votes. Alongside fellow captain Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx, Clark participated in the WNBA All-Star Game draft, which aired on ESPN’s WNBA Countdown.
However, not everything is going smoothly for Clark’s squad. Two of her drafted starters Phoenix Mercury’s Satou Sabally (ankle) and Las Vegas Aces’ A’ja Wilson (wrist) are dealing with injuries, casting doubt on their availability for the July 19 game.
Clark expressed excitement about the drafting process but acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding her team. “It was really fun, honestly. I think I got a great team,” she told reporters on Wednesday. “But two of my starters are injured right now, so I’m hoping they’ll be ready to go. If not, we could be in a bit of trouble.”
Sabally has been seen in a walking boot, while Wilson sustained her wrist injury during a fall in the same game night the draft results were televised. She is set to undergo an MRI to determine the severity.
If either player is ruled out, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert will name replacements. The All-Star Game tips off at 8:30 p.m. ET on July 19 and will be broadcast on ABC.
