Brother of incoming WVU president Michael T. Benson dies

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Steve Benson, the older brother of incoming West Virginia University President Michael T. Benson, has passed away at 71. A renowned editorial cartoonist, Steve earned a Pulitzer Prize and had a distinguished career before retiring from the Arizona Mirror last year. He had suffered a stroke in 2024 and never fully recovered.

Throughout his career, Steve Benson’s work appeared in major publications such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, and Time magazine. He was honored multiple times, including being named Best Editorial Cartoonist by the National Cartoonist Society. Beyond his 1993 Pulitzer win, he was also a finalist for the prize two other times.

Michael T. Benson paid tribute to his brother in a heartfelt message shared on X (formerly Twitter), saying:

“We’re terribly saddened by the passing of our big brother, Steve Benson. He was a prodigious talent but an even better human being. The world saw his work in cartoons published all around the globe, but it was the cards and caricatures he did for friends & family that will be forever remembered & cherished.”

Michael T. Benson is set to officially begin his role as WVU president next Tuesday, succeeding the retiring Gordon Gee.
