Brilliant Waters matches van Gisbergen feat.

Cam Waters dominated the opening round of the Thrifty Sydney 500, proving unbeatable in all conditions wet or dry, day or night. The Tickford Racing driver secured pole position and converted it into victory on all three days at Sydney Motorsport Park, marking a perfect start to the 2025 Repco Sprint Cup.

With new 2025 regulations awarding fastest lap bonus points in sprint rounds provided the driver finishes in the top 15 Waters maximized his haul. He set the fastest lap in all three races, collecting 65 points on Friday and 125 on both Saturday and Sunday. This made him only the second driver in Supercars history, after Shane van Gisbergen, to achieve the maximum 315 points since the introduction of the bonus points system in 2021. Van Gisbergen previously achieved this feat at The Bend Motorsport Park in 2022.

Despite van Gisbergen winning the final race in wet conditions after passing Waters, the Tickford driver was thrilled with his weekend. “How awesome is that? Such a mega weekend and an incredible way to start 2025,” Waters said. “I knew we’d be fast, but not that fast. It’s great to capitalize when you have a strong car. Huge thanks to my team the car was amazing, the pit stops were perfect, and we executed well.”

Reflecting on the race’s changing conditions, Waters added, “I knew they’d lie to me about the weather, they always do! But I had a solid margin and could back off with five laps to go. Even when the rain came, the car remained quick. Honestly, the rain was nice, it cooled down the cabin, which was pretty hot in this Monster Mustang.”

With this dominant performance, Waters now holds a 60-point lead over reigning champion Will Brown heading into the next round in Melbourne. Chaz Mostert and Broc Feeney sit third and fourth in the standings, trailing by 65 and 99 points, respectively.

The 2025 Repco Supercars Championship continues at the Melbourne SuperSprint, part of the Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Australian Grand Prix, from March 13-16.
