BREAKING: The Tasmanian winter arts and music festival is back, with its first line-up under new artistic director Chris Twite…
The iconic Tasmanian winter arts and music festival, Dark Mofo, is set to return in 2025 with a full-scale program under the direction of new artistic leader Chris Twite. After a scaled-back 2024 edition due to rising costs and a need for renewal, the festival will run from June 5 to 15, with the traditional Nude Solstice Swim scheduled for June 21.
### A Bold Return
Dark Mofo is renowned for its provocative and immersive experiences, and Twite promises that the 2025 festival will deliver on that reputation. He describes the upcoming event as “another classic Dark Mofo featuring a massive line-up of international, local and Tasmanian artists,” aiming to “bathe the city in red” and offer two weeks of inspiring art, music, and ritual.
### Signature Rituals and New Experiences
The festival will bring back its staple events, including the Winter Feast, the Ogoh-Ogoh effigy burning, Night Mass, and the Nude Solstice Swim. Night Mass, in particular, is set to evolve, with Twite teasing new spaces, performances, and experiences that will “worm their way through the city”.
### Government Support and Artistic Vision
The Tasmanian government has committed $21.6 million to support Dark Mofo through to 2027, recognizing the festival’s role in attracting over 300,000 visitors between 2013 and 2023 and boosting the state’s tourism and hospitality sectors during the winter months. Twite acknowledges the festival’s subsidized nature, stating that it remains “a gift to the Tasmanian people”
### Looking Ahead
With a focus on innovation and community engagement, Dark Mofo 2025 is poised to reaffirm its status as a world-class winter festival. The full program will be announced in the coming months, but early indications suggest a bold and immersive experience that continues to challenge and captivate audiences.
